MCC Schools in China
Back Email Page

The contributions of the Monticello Christian Church have provided for two new schools in China.

The two schools, built by MCC, are strategically placed in remote areas where education is almost impossible to achieve.  The government supports these programs since they have decreed that all children are to receive a free education through grade 6.  The education is free, but there is no money for supplies and other items necessary for education.  The government concentrates its efforts on the highly populated areas leaving the remote areas to fend for themselves.  Even in the remote areas, there are about 700 people per square mile.

The schools are set up to teach grades K-6.  There are no textbooks and the rudimentary education is taught by recitation and memory.  There are about 8 teachers per school, and grades are often combined.  Children may walk as far as four miles to attend but most of the children are in a 2-mile radius of the school.  The cafeteria consists of a wok, a fire, and rice.
